Pictures!!!
I’ve received some requests inquiring about Shanghai, specifically, what does it look like? Well Shanghai is made up of many different districts (Huangpu, Nanshi, Dongjiadu, Luwan, Xuhui, Dapuqiao, XujiaHui, Changning, Jingan, LuJiazui, and Pudong to name a few). Each of these districts looks different. For example, Lujiazui, which looks across the Huangpu river to The Bund (the old British part of town) looks like a scene from Europe, it is absolutely breathtaking at night (pictures to come!).
Right now I am staying between Luwan and Nanshi (old town), and I have to say, the location is amazing. I am just a 15 minute walk to the subway. If I want to experience Chinese lifestyle, there are plenty of storefront shops surrounding me (including great food street vendors with amazing food!), while on the other hand, if I want the Western world, it is just a 10 minute walk away.
I’ve covered a good portion of the city (excluding Pudong), and have almost gone through my entire copy of Frommer’s Shanghai, a feat which I feel is noteworthy. Ok, so now the fun stuff, here are a few pictures of Shanghai from the apartment I am staying in. Click on an image to start viewing, and make sure you scroll to the bottom of each page for a short description.
Two final notes.
1) The hierarchy of importance for traffic here is as follows. Automobile (size doesn’t matter, and there is really nothing quite two buses hitting each other at 20km/h), scooter, motorized bicycle, bicycle, pedestrian. Never ever forget, that pedestrians do not have any authority on the road, and cars will try to run you over if you get in their way.
2) I am constantly amazed at what people carry on bikes around here. Today I saw a fridge being carried on a bicycle, as well as 6, five gallon water bottles.
